{"id":2082,"date":"2012-09-05T13:26:44","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T10:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jahalin.org\/?p=2082"},"modified":"2012-09-05T13:26:44","modified_gmt":"2012-09-05T10:26:44","slug":"environmental-hazards-threaten-jahalin-american-charities-for-palestine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jahalin.org\/archive\/?p=2082","title":{"rendered":"Environmental hazards threaten Jahalin- American Charities for Palestine"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"color: #800000;\">Environmental hazards threaten \u00a0the health and livelihoods of uprooted Jahalin Bedouins<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>August 2012<\/h4>\n<p>The Abu Dis garbage dump, near the Palestinian town of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abu_Dis\">Abu Dis\u00a0<\/a>situated east of Jerusalem, poses an ongoing health hazard to Bedouin communities living nearby.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.btselem.org\/video\/2012\/01\/israel-plans-expel-tens-of-thousands-of-bedouins-west-bank\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">initial plans<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cforcibly relocate some 2,300 Bedouin living in the area of the Ma\u2019ale Adummim settlement to a site near the Abu Dis refuse dump\u201d have been cancelled. The quoted words come from the Israeli human rights organization, B\u2019Tselem, which noted the public health threat in its\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.btselem.org\/press_releases\/20120321_2011_annual_report\" target=\"_blank\">2011 Annual Report,<\/a>\u00a0released earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Amira Hass\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/print-edition\/news\/bedouin-community-wins-reprieve-from-forcible-relocation-to-jerusalem-garbage-dump-1.411248?localLinksEnabled=false\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a>\u00a0the initial reprieve against the forcible resettlement in February, following the outcry from the Jahalin, as well as Israeli and international human rights groups, the United Nations and the European Union. In late June, Hass\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/news\/national\/israel-freezes-plan-to-move-east-jerusalem-bedouin-to-site-near-garbage-dump.premium-1.444793\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed<\/a>\u00a0that the plan has been suspended \u201cuntil surveys were conducted to assess the environmental repercussions and hazards involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2083\" style=\"width: 448px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jahalin.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bedouin-bbc1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2083 \" title=\"bedouin-bbc1\" src=\"http:\/\/jahalin.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bedouin-bbc1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jahalin.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bedouin-bbc1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.jahalin.org\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/bedouin-bbc1-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Bedouin member of the Jahalin tribe walks in his encampment. An environmental survey found that the dump may be hazardous and at risk of explosion. This did not prevent the Civil Administration\u2019s assistant legal advisor from stating in 2006 that \u201chazards are measurable and the question is whether there are hazards [we] can live with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, many already live near the waste site.
